VERSES BEHIND THE SONG: NEVER TOO LATE

by ECCENTRICSHEEP Mon Feb 22, 2021 7:09 am

For a while we are going to study the verses behind Disciple songs! Each week one song will be chosen, and we will take a closer look at the verses listed in the liner notes with that song.

Please focus your studies on the verses and let the lyrics contribute to your thoughts after a study of the verses. We aren't here to study Disciple lyrics, we are here to study the word of God.

This week we are studying the verses behind the song "Never Too Late."
With hammer in hand, I began to pull out every nail. Every board I placed beside me on the damp ground. After many years of pouring everything I could into avoiding that way, I found myself walking there once again.

Isaiah 55:6-7
6 Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
7 Let the wicked forsake their ways
and the unrighteous their thoughts.
Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

1 tim 1:15-16
15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

1 cor 6:11
9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

psalm 38:4
Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
or discipline me in your wrath.
2 Your arrows have pierced me,
and your hand has come down on me.
3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;
there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.
4 My guilt has overwhelmed me
like a burden too heavy to bear.

joel 2:12-13
“Even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”

13 Rend your heart
and not your garments.
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love,
and he relents from sending calamity.
14 Who knows? He may turn and relent
and leave behind a blessing—
grain offerings and drink offerings
for the Lord your God.

zech 1:3
2 “The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. 3 Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty. 4 Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord.
With hammer in hand, I began to pull out every nail. Every board I placed beside me on the damp ground. After many years of pouring everything I could into avoiding that way, I found myself walking there once again.

Its never too late to start again
Its never too late if you're breathing

6 Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
7 Let the wicked forsake their ways
and the unrighteous their thoughts.
Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

So the theme of these verses is come back, and come back now while you have the chance.

We all have periods where we are distant from God and drift away. It will be different for everything because Satan will approach us all differently. There is nothing new under the sun so all humans have faced the same things, but we are also all different pieces of the puzzle and parts of the body so we will all be approached differently from one another. We all have different thorns and different struggles so different things will get to us and get under our skin.

Sin is what separates us from God, and it is sin that causes us to drift away. The more you cling to sin the farther you will drift away from God. When you accept lies you will fall away from the truth. When you prioritize pleasing yourself instead of helping others you will fall away. When you eyes focus on the world instead of God you will falter. It doesn't even take long for it to happen. Before you know it you don't know where you are anymore.

So, why don't we just come back when we realize where we ended up? We are ashamed. We think we have sinned too much and drifted too far for God and any brothers and sisters to possibly want us back. We don't know how to get back perhaps because we gone so far. It a lot of time has gone on we think its too far because we've been gone to long.

The thing is, we are never too far away from God for him to find us while we are on this earth. God is everywhere and in everything. He's been with you all along. He's never left you. You turned away from him, but he's still been there waiting for you to call for him again. So while you are alive on this earth all you have to do is call for him again and he will answer. That's why now is the time to seek him, while he surrounds you always. One day if you do not make it to heaven you will be without him forever. NOW is the time.

We are never too sinful for God to forgive us unless we just completely reject him. Of course if you had completely rejected him you wouldn't be asking for forgiveness and you wouldn't care because you don't believe so none of this would refer to you anymore. If you do believe there is no sin too much for God to forgive. Jesus died for all sins. God knew everything you would do before the earth was created. You have not surprised him. He's just waiting for you to seek him and ask for forgiveness. So however much filth covers you, just seek him....and seek him NOW while the blood of Jesus can cover you and atone for you.

It is never too late while you are alive. Seek him now. He's waiting for you. Don't worry about how much you've done wrong or how far you've drifted it doesn't matter. He'll find you anywhere and come to you.
With hammer in hand, I began to pull out every nail. Every board I placed beside me on the damp ground. After many years of pouring everything I could into avoiding that way, I found myself walking there once again.

Okay back to the shame part.

Shame is a big part of it. We don't want to be revealed and exposed. We don't want other people to know what we've done, and we don't to face God with what we've done. We don't want to look at it ourselves. So we run and hide and try not to look at it.

Like I said, God already sees it and knows what you did. He knew when he sent Jesus to die for you. You can't hide it from him. He's just waiting for you to bring it to him and reveal it yourself. Its about you and what you need to do.

Its funny, we're all ashamed and hiding stuff from each other when we're all the same in many ways. We all have different struggles and thorns, but in the end we all are sinners trying to put a cover over ourselves so we look perfect to everyone else. The church would be a lot different we act like it was a room full of sinners instead of a room full of Sunday best perfect people.

If people just talked about this stuff more we would all learn we aren't alone. All this hiding is for nothing.
With hammer in hand, I began to pull out every nail. Every board I placed beside me on the damp ground. After many years of pouring everything I could into avoiding that way, I found myself walking there once again.
