Ecclesiastes 3:
12 I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. 13 That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God.

God wants us to be happy but this verse doesn't tell us how

14 Turn from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.


There are 3 things that David says we should do

James 3:
3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.


Solomon told something about how we should not have evil talk come from our tongues.

Proverbs 4:
24 Put away perversity from your mouth;
keep corrupt talk far from your lips.


Proverbs 13:
3 He who guards his lips guards his life,
but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin


2. Stop doing Evil

Exodus 23:2
2 "Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd

14 Turn from evil and do good

What is Evil?

Galations 5:19-21
(19) Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, depravity, (20) idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outburst of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions, (21) envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar things, as I warned you before: Those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

2nd Chronicles 7:14
14 then if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, if they will pray and seek me and stop their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven. I will forgive their sin, and I will heal their land.

27 don't turn off the road of goodness;
keep away from evil paths.

3. Do Good

Psalm 34:14
14 Turn from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.

We should not start fights but rather end them

Proverbs 4:
26 Be careful what you do,
and always do what is right.

if we are doing good, people will be able to see it in our lives.

James3: 13, 17+18
13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

17 But the wisdom that comes from God is First of all pure, then peaceful, gentle, and easy to please. This wisdom is always ready to help those who are troubled and to do good for others. It is always fair and honest.18 People who work for peace in a peaceful way plant a good crop of right-living.

When we do good it is a offensive weapon against the evil forces around us.

Proverbs 21:
15 When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous
but terror to evildoers.
